Elements of the Design

The proposal is to introduce a new Residential streetscape along Chapel Lane / Dominic Street as well as the introduction of a serviced Commercial Development on the corner of Main St and Chapel Lane. Cognisance of the Heritage Status of Cashel, the existing Town Wall and the Friary of St. Dominic have been taken into account

The Architectural forms are translated from the existing Gable end of St Dominics Friary. These are adapted to read as traditional Residential palimpsest. The internal layout of the Duplex unit is adopted from the Italian Piano Nobile type to facilitate the enjoyment of views to the Rock of Cashel.

The corner of the site on Main St and Chapel Lane is being utilised for the Commercial aspect.

This part of the site by virtue of its position on an important urban junction required a strong Architectural element to reinforce its identity. We propose to treat the elevation with cut stone cladding and clean glazed opening with a vertical emphasis. The Atrium will be an open triple height space, which will allow a dramatic entrance. At night by introducing creative lighting, we can form a radiating counter-balance to public urban activity.
The corner of the junction is further reinforced with the simplistic cut stone Campanile type structure. The narative of the existing streetscape is maintained with the comparisons of eaves levels with the adjoining buildings. At the opposite end of the commercial units, we have situated 4 No. Residential units in a similar layout to the other Residential units.

Again, we emphasise the use of traditional materials treated in a contemporary style to facilitate the intervention of a new development into a Heritage Town".
